Description

Megalodon meaning “big tooth”, is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago (mya), during the Early Miocene to the Pliocene. During some of this time Florida was mostly covered with water. Therefor Megalodon shark’s teeth as well as many other kinds of shark’s teeth are found throughout Florida. This tooth was found in the St Mary’s river in north Florida. The St Mary’s river has quite a bit of tannic acid which turns shark teeth and other fossils brown.

The tooth measures 4-1/2 inches.
