Description

Terracotta Figure from the Bahia Culture C. 500BC – 500AD

Found in Manabí Province in Ecuador.

Size is about 7 inches long and weighs 238 grams.

The Bahía culture lived along the Pacific coast of Ecuador. They were skilled potters who produced many figurines showing clothing, jewelry, and social roles. Archaeologists have found large deposits of broken figurines, suggesting they were ritually offered or intentionally broken during ceremonies.

Terracotta sculptures from the Bahia culture, found in Ecuador (around 500 BC – 500 AD), are known for their detailed designs of people and animals. These figures were often used in ceremonies and represented gods, spiritual leaders, or daily life. Made by hand using coiling and molding techniques, the sculptures feature expressive faces and bright colors. They offer a glimpse into the beliefs, art, and rituals of the Baia people and their connection to other ancient Precolumbian cultures.

This 2000 year old figure still has nice paint. The neck has been broken and repaired.
