Description
Taino standing cemi from Hispaniola
Dates 1100-1450
Measures 7″ x 4″ (14 x 8cm)
This a wonderful standing Cemi, in great condition. The details are intriguing. This cemi has the large eyes and mouth typical Taino, but this face also has a nose and ears carved. You can see the hands grasping its knees, with incised fingers, toes and knees. On the back there are details of ribs and spine.
The Taino were also the first people that Christopher Columbus encountered when he reached the western hemisphere. At the time of European contact in the late 15th century, the Taino were the main inhabitants of many Caribbean islands, including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and parts of the Lesser Antilles. This early encounter marked the beginning of a significant and lasting impact on the history of the region.
