c.600-800 CE

Found in Columbia

Size is about 2.5 inches diameter and weighs about 10 grams.

The Calima Gold Pectoral from Colombia, dating back to 600-800 CE, is an impressive piece of art made by ancient cultures like the Calima and Tairona. Made of gold, it is a large chest ornament that often features detailed designs of animals, symbols, or people. It was likely worn for ceremonies or to show high status. This artifact shows the advanced metalworking skills of the time and highlights the importance of gold in the culture’s social and religious practices.

The pectoral was shaped by first hammering a gold-copper alloy known as tumbaga into a sheet, which was subsequently cut into the desired shape. The artist could then add details by working the sheet with a bone or metal tool over a soft anvil made of leather or a sack of fine sand.
