Navajo pottery has a rich history, with its earliest forms dating back to the 1500’s. While the Navajo are known for weaving, silverwork, and other crafts, pottery was also an important part of their culture, though less of a specialty compared to other tribes. Initially, Navajo pottery was primarily utilitarian, used for everyday purposes like cooking and storage. Over time, they developed a distinct style, incorporating traditional Navajo symbols, patterns, and colors.

The Navajo, also known as the Diné, have a rich history in the Southwest United States, migrating from western Canada and settling in the Four Corners region between 1300 and 1500 AD.  They adopted agriculture and herding from other Native American groups and the Spanish, developing a unique farming and pastoral lifestyle. The U.S. government created the Navajo Nation in 1868, which remains the largest Native American reservation in the country.
