Isorthoceras sociale is an extinct straight-shelled nautiloid that lived about 445 million years ago during the Ordovician period. Fossils of this marine animal are commonly found in the Maquoketa Formation near Graf, Iowa, where large groups of them are preserved together in limestone. These fossil beds, known as “nautiloid coquinas,” show many well-preserved shells, sometimes with traces of their original shine. The site near Graf is popular with both scientists and fossil collectors and also contains other ancient sea creatures like trilobites and brachiopods.
