This ancient tortoise fossil, Stylemys sp., is from the Oligocene period, was found in the Badlands of South Dakota. It lived about 33.9 to 23 million years ago, during a time when the region had a warmer climate and different ecosystems. Stylemys had a thick, domed shell and strong limbs, making it a slow-moving herbivore that fed on plants. The fossils discovered here help scientists understand the changes in the environment between the Eocene and Oligocene epochs. They also provide important clues about the evolution of tortoises and other reptiles during this time.
