Moldavite is a dark green projectile tektite. Tektites are formed by a meteorite impact which melts the earth under the impact point.
A meteorite hit the earth probably in southern Germany about 14.7 million years ago. The impact melted the earth underneath the meteorite, plashing it into what is now the Czech Republic near the Moldau River, hence the name – moldavite.
