Stone Zemi
900-1400 AD
Taino Culture / Hispaniola
Size is about 7 inches tall and weighing around 7 pounds.
A stone zemi from AD 900–1400 was a sacred carving made by the Taíno people of Hispaniola (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Zemis represented spirits, ancestors, or gods and were believed to bring protection, good luck, and successful harvests. Carved from stone into human or animal shapes, they were used in ceremonies and kept in homes or other special places. These objects show how important religion and spiritual beliefs were in Taíno culture.
