Description

Pelecypod Oyster Fossil

Commonly called “Devil’s Toenail,” this oyster was active during the early Cretaceous Period. Its compressed body enclosed by the shell and having no head or teeth, would get oxygen and food through a muscular siphon (tube). Being a bivalve, the two shells were together by hinges that looked like small teeth. The shells of bivalves are usually open. When the animal was frightened, strong muscles pulled the shells shut until danger had passed. A strong muscular foot shaped like hatched helped the animal move about. Pelecypods form the second largest class of mollusks.
