Mastodon Molar

Pleistocene epoch – 1.6 million years to 20,000 years old

Size is about 4.5 inches by 3 inches and weighs about 591 grams.

The Mastodon (Mammut americanum) was a large, herbivorous mammal that roamed North America during the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 1.6 million to 20,000 years ago. Closely related to elephants but distinct in several features, mastodons had a stockier build, a long, curved set of tusks, and a body covered in shaggy hair. These creatures primarily inhabited forested areas, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including leaves, shrubs, and branches. Unlike woolly mammoths, which favored open tundra, mastodons were better adapted to wooded environments. Their extinction at the end of the Pleistocene is often attributed to a combination of climate change and hunting pressure from early human populations. Fossilized remains of mastodons, including teeth, bones, and tusks, offer valuable insights into the prehistoric ecosystems of North America.
