Description

Fossil Turritella

Slender, high-spired shells, a type of snail shell, turritella is found in fossil form all over the world. The animal itself was soft-bodied and carried its home along with it. It needed this shell to dwell in, as well as for protection from its enemies. Today they live in the sediment of the soft sea floor and filter fine particles of food from the water as it did on the sea floor in the early Cretaceous Period. This agatized turritella is found in the Green River Formation, Sweetwater County, Wyoming.
