Description
Fossil Algae
The earliest forms of life were simple organisms such as algae (AL jee) and bacteria. Being the oldest fossils known to scientists, this plant life grew mostly in water and was a source of food for water animals. Some species floated on the surface and others were attached to stones or weeds in the water. Large marine algae are called seaweeds. A few species of algae were probably the first living things to come out of the water and live on land. From the Cambrian Period, this type found in the Marjam Formation, Millard County, Utah, existed over 550 million years ago.
